WISDOM OF FLORENCE SCOVEL SHINN

~ YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS BOOK ~
This book was a real spiritual awakening for me. Life is all about what you put out there coming back to you. I have purchased several copies for friends who have all been going through their own difficulties. Each person has been greatly uplifted through reading this book. I, myself, was laid off shortly after reading this book. Thinking it was a bad thing at the time, later I realized that things happen for a reason and that better was in store for me. The affirmations are just wonderful and gave me a whole new way of thinking. When I am feeling down, I always refer to Florence and can count on her "wisdom" to get me through it. Hope it can help you too.

Life Changing
It was an answer to my prayers. This is the ABSOLUTELY, BEST interpretation of the Lord's words, I have ever read or heard. It just makes sense! I believe others take the bible's words too literally. Shinn's verison makes more sense. If you are turned off by organized religion and want to read a more practical way to interpret the Bible, you found it. This book will nuture your spiritual growth, if that is what you are seeking, and even if you are not.

The Wisdom of Florence Scovel Shinn
This book is a life changer. I "happened" upon this book at the perfect time in my life. Others might say that the timing was "coincidence", but I know that when you are seeking; you will find. This book had been on my own shelf for awhile and I didnt know it was there until It was the right time. The wisdom of the author was/is truly inspired and her teachings can help us take the teachings of Jesus to a level of understanding that we can indeed "move mountains" or obstacles in our own life. If you are about to read this book, prepare for your life to change and your mountains to move!

The Runner's Handbook: The Best-Selling Classic Fitness Guide for Beginner and Intermediate Runners
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (June, 1996)
Authors: Bob Glover, Jack Shepherd, and Shelly-Lynn Florence Glover
Average review score:

How to get fit and healthy despite your best intentions.
This book should be banned. Just over a year ago, I innocently picked it up with the vague idea that sometime I should start running. And what happened? Well, I started, and thanks to Bob Glover's insidious inspirational tone, I haven't stopped. Some books about running seem to give you a stitch the minute you begin reading them, but not this one. The Runner's Handbook gently coaxes you out on to the roads for ten minutes at a time, then 15, then 20, until one day you find yourself running non-stop for half-an-hour or more, three days a week. But that's not enough. Oh no. Soon, you're taking Coach Glover's expert advice on how to run a 10K. You tuck the book under your arm when you go buying running shoes. You steadily alter your eating habits, so you feel leaner, more nimble. You even alter next year's holiday plans so you can fit in the Madrid Marathon. Worse still, in the evening you find yourself laying aside the new E Annie Proulx in favour of Bob's chapter on Running in Cold Weather. This is the first time I've actually read A Book That Changed My Life. And sure, I'm fitter now, I'm healthier, and I've lost 25 pounds. But that Bob Glover's got a lot to answer for.

Great for Beginner and Intermediate Runners
If you are a beginner or intermediate runner looking to improve, get this book.

I consider myself an intermediate runner - I'm currently up to 20 miles/week and have never run a race of greater than 5 miles.

I found this book to be a great inspirational tool as well as a valuable reference. I'm flirting with the idea of running a marathon and will certainly use Coach Glover's training program if I do. The best thing that I found was that the book is *readable* - so many self-help and non-fiction books seem like they were written to increase sales at Starbuck's.

Since October, 2000, I've been logging my running (and recently weight) in an Excel spreadsheet where I also graph certain key statistics (total miles over a running seven day period and average minutes/mile over the same period). A number of people who know about this think that I'm insane (or a geek). Coach Glover recommends keeping a diary (though he doesn't address graphing), confirming my sanity (or his geekiness).

Helps any runner run smarter, better
My husband ordered this book for me and honestly, I was quite put off at first. I mean any real runner like myself, and we're talking darn-good *marathon* runner here, doesn't need any book telling them how to be a better, more successful runner. Sheez, you're born with it or you're not -Right?

Wrong! The Runner's Handbook really spells out great advice for advanced runners or those just starting to run road races. The Runner's Handbook is packed with lots of great general information on running, injuries, diet and more.

I came to rely on the comprehensive training schedules and benchmark times for every commonly raced distance from the mile to the marathon that Bob Glover included in his book. This is how I came to learn why I wasn't as good (proportionally) at the 5k as I was at a marathon. It's a different training regimen, a different mind-set, and after reading this book it's easy to understand and correct.

When I really want to get motivated, I flip back to the Race Predictor appendix, calculate how fast I should be running, and set new goals for myself. Any runner of any ability who wants wants to set new goals (and what runner doesn't)should look to this book as *the* tool.

The Velveteen Rabbit
Published in Paperback by Putnam Pub Group (Audio) (April, 1989)
Authors: Margery Williams, Margery Williams Bianco, and Florence Graham
Average review score:

Velveteen Rabbit story good for parents and children
It's a sweet story of a 'simple' stuffed rabbit amidst the more 'complex' modern toys in a boy's "toy collection". The rabbit starts to believe that in order to get the love of the boy, he needs to appear 'real', or be able to zoom about like the motorized toys...
(And I'm not going to tell you the end hahahahaha!!!)
It was great having that read to me, while I was hugging my stuffed animals in bed.
But -- in a way, at first glance it looks like a simple story, but it is actually a surprisingly complex story. Leave it on your child's bookshelf as he/she grows up and he/she will reread it again and again as he/she questions issues such as "who am I?", "what does it mean to be 'real'"?, "what is my role in this world?", and even "what is death"?

It's wonderful every time I read it!
I make sure I use this book with each class I teach--3rd and4th graders. They always get it--that love makes us real, too. Theymake the connection between the Skin Horse becoming shabby and people getting old. I always bring in my stuffed velveteen rabbit I bought years ago and it starts making the rounds and popping up on different children's laps. It is a pleasure to see them become attached to the rabbit instead of "mechanical toys that were very superior, and looked down upon everyone else." They also relate to the lessons the Velveteen Rabbit learns from the Skin Horse about how becoming real is a painful process sometimes and can take a long time.

An extremely touching book
This book is a simple work of art. Its beauty in itself is virtually indescribable. When I was little, it was my favorite book. In fact, I've had it ever since I was born. It is about a boy who owns a stuffed rabbit, and longs for it to be real. Eventually, because he loved the rabbit so much, his wish was granted. The book is so well written that it brings tears to my eyes almost every time I read it. It is definitely one of my all-time favorites.

Tyler Florence's Real Kitchen
Published in Hardcover by Clarkson N. Potter (25 March, 2003)
Author: Tyler Florence
Average review score:

Not another superstars cookbook...
This one's a winner. Tyler Florence of Food 911 fame shares a wonderful assortment of relatively easy recipes that any half way knowledgeable home cook can produce. The food is simple enough that even beginners can manage to bang out even the complicated dishes in the time given with each recipe.

The sections on equipment and pantry stocking were great for a person with very little experience cooking, but readers with advanced knowledge will find them a boring read. I recommend skimming that section if you have more than a working knowledge of kitchen equipment and food stuffs. I understand the need for these sections in almost every chefs cookbook, but after you've seen one, you've seen them all.

This is a very attractive book. The photography and food styling are fantastic. If you just want to look at pictures this is the wrong book for you. Pick up one of Charlie Trotter's books if you want to see some truly uncookable stuff. This is a more usable cookbook than all of Trotter's books combined. All of the ingredients are available in most major cities and won't require all of your pans and most of your paycheck. The recipes are very doable.

This book should be in every kitchen! (For all levels)
Whether you love to cook, or just love to eat, you'll enjoy this well-written, and beautifully photographed cookbook. The recipes are not difficult, and you will look like a Star Chef. You'll find some creative, and simple to do, recipes for unusual hors d'oeuvres--truly impressive! And the other recipes for any type of meal you could possibly want to eat, or serve--they're here. Tyler Florence has a very natural and neighborly way of helping us in the kitchen. Beginner level to professional chef--this book is for you--it's for all of us who love to cook, or simply love to eat, & even for those who wish they could cook. (It's really for EVERYBODY!) This is your guide. And the Bill Bettencourt photographs are absolutley mouth-watering. This is everything a cookbook should be--it's lovely, and fun to read. Makes a great gift too. (you'll find humor in this book, as well as fabulous recipes,& lovely photos) Enjoy! Every page is a pleasure.

It is about time!
Okay, so I have a huge crush on Tyler like any other woman who has seen him on Food 911. That said, this is still the best cookbook I have bought in a long time. Although most of the recipes involve simple ingredients and are accessible even to those with only a basic culinary skills, the result is full-flavored and elegant food. While I love to cook, I have resisted investing in cookbooks. I found it wasteful to only make a few special recipes from a book. With Tyler's book, you get a glipmse of cuisine from a wide variety of cultures. At the same time, most recipes don't require exotic ingredients that may be hard to come by. This book is true to Tyler's show. His goal is to get people who love cooking to try anything and be successful at it. Like it says in title this is truly "an indispenable book for anybody who likes to cook". Thanks Tyler, I have been waiting for this one.

Literature Guide: Mr. Popper's Penguins (Grades 4-8)

Great for Teachers to Use For A Thematic Unit
My daughter recently brought this book home, and after reading only one page, I went and bought my own copy! I had to have this for my classroom!

I teach children with mild to moderate specific learning disabilities who need to regularly experience success in reading if they are ever going to become lifelong readers. What better way to foster desired literacy behaviors than using this delightful tale of an absentminded housepainter, his tidy, yet serious wife, their two children, and 12 performing penguins!

After reading this book, I thought that it would be ideal to use as the focus of a thematic unit on penguins. Believe it or not, there are many themes in the book that lend themselves to serious classroom discussion. For example, Mr. Popper daydreams of far-away places. There is the theme of daydreaming, why people daydream, as well as the theme of travel. Students could be asked to journal about their daydreams, as well as their hopes and dreams of visiting faraway places, which leads into a study of the geography and culture of other people.

In my 6th grade language arts class, I plan on focusing on the 17 different types of penguins there are, where they are found, some of their habits, as well as studying about polar exploration. Thanks to this timeless tale, I have a wealth information to use for exploration with my own class.

Mr. Popper's Penguins is a wonderful example of how a well written trade book can be used across the curriculum, to foster lifelong literacy habits, and broaden a child's horizon.

Its was good
I have read a book called Mr.Popper. I like the book because penguin is one of my favorite animal. The book was so exciting that it made my eyes always pay attention on the book, and it made me want to read more. I like it when Mr.Popper has lots of penguins. The main problem on this book is that Mr.Popper always wanted a penguin, but one day, he did get a penguin. He took care of the penguin very well. After a while, Mr.Popper's penguin was having lots of children. One day when Mr.Popper was on jail, someone got him out, and told him to lived in Alaska.

The Competitive Runner's Handbook: The Bestselling Guide to Running 5Ks Through Marathons
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (April, 1999)
Authors: Shelly-Lynn Florence Glover and Bob New Competitve Runner's Handbook Glover
Average review score:

Excellent.
I first bought an earlier edition of this book in 1993, the year I ran my first NYC Marathon. If you want to get immersed in running this is THE book to buy. This new edition gets even better. It's accurate, concise, thorough, well-organized, and motivating! Detail-oriented people will love this book. I recommend it for those who are seriously interested in learning everything about running and the details and preparation that go into training & racing. Even if you're not into racing it's still a great book because you get details on proper clothing, shoes, etc. (or you can buy the authors' other book, 'Beginners Guide to Running. . ." )

A Running Bible
I can't say enough good things about this book. I recently ran my first marathon, on a slow, hilly course in San Francisco, in a time I was really pleased with, and only because of the advice from the Glovers. From big picture psychological issues to the most mundane details, I found myself constantly turning to this book and finding the right answers. Everything from diet to race day details are covered in here, in a concise, conversational and accessible way. I would unreservedly recommend this book to any beginning or intermediate runner who is looking either to improve their times in shorter races (5K, 10K, etc) or run a first (or faster) marathon -- or, if you just want to get in shape and enjoy a running program, the book is still great (although it is focused a bit on racing).

The Competitive Runner's Handbook: The Bestselling Guide to
I read and bought more than 200 books on sports and martial arts. When I received the book and read a few hours, I told myself that I really got an "excellent" book. I can say "The Competitive Runner's Handbook: The Bestselling Guide to Running 5Ks Through Marathons" by Bog Glover, Shelly-Lynn Florence Glover is best book I have ever read. I can't believe that a book at that price could cover almost every aspect about distant running in such details. Despite having a keen interest, I am no expert in sport and definitely not in a position to say that that book outdoes all the other books on the same subject. But, as a reader with keen interest in sport, not necessarily only distant running, I couldn't find something that is lacking. If there is something I could humbly ask the authors to include, maybe a number of photos showing the posture of stride and posture of the good runners together with an analysis of the angles of body and the limbs. In fact, the authors have given a lot of description about the ideal running forms. The simplicity of use of language, a lot of valuable information and step by step programme making you feel that the authors are personally coaching you. I even promote it to some of the friends who do not have a keen interest in distant running because it is just not only for the distant runners, it is an interesting book to read. Of course, I will still buy some books by other authors. Given I could afford to buy only one book on distant running, that book is definitely my choice.

Florence Harding: First Lady the Jazz Age and the Death of America's Most Scandalous President
Published in Paperback by Quill (June, 1999)
Author: Carl Sferrazza Anthony
Average review score:

A thorough study of a complex personality
I confess that before reading this book I knew little of Florence Harding beyond the rumor that she poisoned her husband. After reading Mr. Anthony's excellent work I know feel that I know of her better. I'm just not sure I like her. Yes, she was an activist First Lady, sometimes even overshadowing her husband. And she certainly was single-minded in her drive to get Harding to the White House. But at what cost? She essentially abandoned her son, seeing little of him during his short life. Her involvement with her grandchildren was minimal at best. She had no close friends outside of Evalyn McLean, with the possible exception of "Doc" Sawyer, although that relationship was more one of interdependence. See what I mean about complex? Mr. Anthony has done a great job in partially rehabilitating the Duchess' historical image. It's a shame the selfish Mrs. Harding in a sense inhibited her biographer by burning nearly all of her husband's presidential papers. As an aside, I couldn't help noticing parallels between Harding's administration and the current one. See if you agree.

American History more Fascinating than Fiction
Florence Harding's biography is not something that I would normally want to read, let alone spend money to obtain. However, after leafing through it in our local bookstore, I added it to my cart on a whim the last time I bought from Amazon. If you are interested in American History in general and the presidency in particular (as I am), you will devour this book (as I did). The parallels to the Clintons, while unmentioned by the author, are undeniable; in fact, it would be appropriate for Hillary to attempt channeling with Florence rather than Eleanor Roosevelt! This makes the reading all the more lively and contemporary. This biography does a great service to the memory of Florence Harding, who comes off very poorly in nearly all the historical summaries I have read. She is usually portrayed as imperious, aggressive, and authoritarian -- which she was, but not without reason; and Harding is portrayed as being the victim of a loveless marriage -- which he was not, she adored him. Why is the wife always blamed for her "coldness" when a husband sleeps around? I was left with great admiration for Mrs. Harding, and a desire to learn even more about her. Congratulations, Mr. Anthony, on a monumental biography.

Wow! There once was a woman named Florence Kling....
I haven't read a lot about the Hardings -- at least, nothing much that presented them as other than a brief, corrupt interlude in our country's history -- so it was with interest that I picked up this big, thick book on a woman I knew little about. Once I opened the cover, I was never bored, and seldom tempted to skip pages :-) It was truly fascinating to discover Florence Harding as a real person. This book does include all the rumors and intrigues that surrounded Florence and her contemporaries ... and without which you would lose sight of historical perspective, for we are all not only what we think of ourselves, but also what others think of us. But it covers more than rumors and scandal; extensively researched and well-written, this book presents a stunning portrait of a complex woman and her times. However ... the similarities between the Clintons and the Hardings has probably stimulated my interest in reincarnation more than this book's non-metaphysical author would prefer ! A good read!

Personality Plus

Powerful yet simple relationship and self-improvement advice
It is not easy to accept psychological advice that appears so simple (especially as a Perfect Melancholy as I am). Yet Florence has taken concepts that in reality are probably much more complex and reduced them to a usable format. This book will make you laugh - mark my words you will believe Florence spent weeks observing you. I'm not convinced that our personality traits are innate (rather than a product of our environment) as Florence argues, but regardless of this, the advice is no less powerful. I made my girlfriend read the book, have passed it on to my brother and his wife and wish I could pass it on to all those I care for. This book is only for those people who will find themselves in relationships or have to interact with people at some time in their lives.

Outstanding Resource
PERSONALITY PLUS is one of the most enlightening books that I have ever read. Florence Littauer shows how to determine what type of temperament you fall into: Popular Sanguine, Powerful Choleric, Perfect Melancholy, or Peaceful Phlegmatic. Understanding that, we are then shown the strengths and weaknesses that accompany each of them. Littauer then teaches, gently and humorously, how we can improve ourselves and our relationships by simply recognizing and accepting the temperaments (in ourselves and others). For once we understand that the other temperaments are different from us because that is simply how they are built, and not because they wish to annoy us or make things difficult, it changes the way we look at and deal with people. As I read this book it was like a lightbulb popped on in my head--difficult people in my life were suddenly seen in a new light and dark motives I had attributed to them disappeared. And our relationships improved.

I highly recommend this book. It will help you in friendships, with family, with romance, and at work. I recommend it even more for those who are in positions of leadership. Understanding yourself and then understanding those around you will radically change your life interactions for the better. FIVE STARS.

A wonderful life changing experience
Personality Plus is one of the best books that has great impact on human relationships. You will be able to discover who you really are by reading this book. I share this book to as many people as I could. It will drmatically change your outlook about yourself and others.

The Game of Life and How To Play It
This book was given to my family as a gift eighteen years ago. I have personally given it as a gift more times than I can count over the years. I now work as a Psychic Counselor and talk to people over the world. I recommend this book to all of my clients. The thank-you's that each bring back to me when people read this book tells me that more people are working to make this world a brighter place. The wholesomeness of looking at the world through Florence Scovill Shinn's eyes mirrors a wonderful world of positiveness that we all should follow. In my daily life she has been a constant reminder that what we say think and do, reflects in every area of our life. I had hoped someday to tell more people about this book thanks to amazon I can. My suggestion is read and re-read Florences' book you will learn something new about yourself every time you do. Thank-you to the publishers who continue printing her book and Amazon continues the sales

Around the World
After reading this book I purchased several copies to loan out to friends. I asked that instead of returning them that they pass them on. The books have gone around the world as I have gotten emails from a number of people that read and enjoyed them. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was short, to the point, and made a lot of sense. I am a big advocate on the power of words and thoughts and this book gets the message across quite simply. Florence gives an abundance of affirmations that can be used in manifesting change in our lives. Change does not need to be complicated or difficult. Florence gives some simple, practical advice on what to do to create a better life. If I can create change without expending a lot of energy, then that's all the more I energy I have to use for fun. I highly recommend this book.

DELIGHTFUL MANUAL FOR HAPPINESS
I am constantly delighted by the elegance and grace with which the early and mid-20th century metaphysicians conveyed the eternal truths. People like Ralph Waldo Trine, Katherine Ponder, Raymond Charles Barker, Joseph Murphy and Frederick Bailes are still the best choice to read if you are serious about improving your life. And judging by this wonderful little book., Florence Scovel-Shinn takes pride of place amongst them. With a great economy of words, she makes her point and in simple language explains the benefits of right thinking and how to solve problems. The text is strewn with jewels in the form of uplifting statements and memorable affirmations. Amongst other topics, the laws of prosperity, nonresistance, karma and forgiveness are presented in a fresh way, with clear instructions on how to impress the subconscious. She covers everything that is really important in a book that one can read in a day. Of course, I recommend regular reading of this wonderful manual for living a life of joy.

Pippi Longstocking
Published in Paperback by Puffin (May, 1997)
Authors: Astrid Ericsson Lindgren, Louis S. Glanzman, and Florence Lamborn
Average review score:

One of the most engaging books written for boys and girls!
Pippi Longstocking is frequently one of the first chapter books read to children, and as a first grade teacher, I can attest to the value of its choice. Pippi is a larger than life character who does so many things that young children find absolutely wonderful and satisfying. * * * * * * * * * * * Pippi, an *orphan* with braids askew, lives all by herself at Villa Villekulla. Her only companions are her monkey and a horse (who lives on her porch).Children get to know Pippi through Annika and Tommy, *proper* children who live next door. Pippi looks at things as obliquely as her braids; she usually sees the positive side of things, unless she is requested to go to school or learn the multiplication tables. She has her own ideas about things, and simply cannot be made to follow the rules, but her way of disobeying is amusing and quite chathartic for children who ALWAYS have to follow the rules that adults make. She does not inspire kids to break the rules;she just makes them laugh with glee at her absurdity. She has *powers* that they adore!

Excellent Book
I thought that Pippi Longstocking was an excellent book. It was very exciting and full of adventure. I thought that it was cool that she had a monkey for a pet. I also liked that she lived alone, being a nine year old girl, yet she could take care of herself. If Pippi wasn't out making trouble she was at home cooking on the kitchen floor. She does everything that comes her way. She has a very high self-esteem and she is almost always up to something, whether it be dancing with the robbers or talking about her grandmother's housekeeper, Malin. I would recommend this book to older elementary students. They would have a fun time reading all the crazy things Pippi does.

18...And Still Reading Pippi
For years, I've enjoyed reading, re-reading, and re-re-reading Pippi Longstocking and the three other books that follow it. This is one of the very few children's books that are, very necessarily, a staple of any good childhood. Pippi allows every child, whether it be in age, or in heart, to live out fantasies of going to the ends of the earth and of having fun adventures from which they'll always come out on top, with Pippi leading the way. Though there were few books in the series, especially compared to most other children's series, the powerful words contained within their covers more than compensate for this, raising your imagination to new heights.

I have only one message for anyone reading this: BUY THIS BOOK. Whether or not you have children, this is an exciting, completely irreverent, and just plain fun story that will have you laughing and dreaming just like a kid--again. :)
